Livin' on a diet of gristle and bone
Late nights payin' for love on the phone
Passed out on the couch with a bottle of jack
Waitin' for a woman who will never come back
He used to have a girl when the mill first opened
But it didnšt take long 'til her heart was broken
Midnight shifts and long days at the bar
Sometimes we all seem to go too far
Fortune teller in a carnival tent
Turned up a card and condemned him to death
It really didnšt come as much of a shock
But ever since then hešs been scared of the dark
Long nights - looking for love
Lost in a world of concrete and blood
Waiting - for a sign from above
Lost in a world of concrete and blood
Highschool teachers all had agreed
He had big problems with authority
Road signs warning of trouble ahead
A matter of time was all that they said
But sometimes all of that grit and steel
Says less about a man than what it conceals
There's a whole lot of people at the bottom end
Who remember who was there when they needed a friend
Mill shut down and the town caved in
Cops got mean and so did the wind
He got busted by the river smokin' weed in his truck
The world kept movin' but he got stuck
Long nights - looking for love
Lost in a world of concrete and blood
Waiting - for a sign from above
Lost in a world of concrete and blood
They found a ball-peen hammer by the drivers' seat
He kept for when things get rough on the streets
The fights are always over either money or love
The two things there just aren't enough of
So they charged him with "Weapons" and "Breaching The Peace"
And "Possession For The Purpose" for a dime bag of weed
He was unemployed so he couldn't make bail
He spent three months dyin' in the county jail
When his trial day came the courthouse was jammed
The cops were nervous they didnšt understand
That the key to justice is humanity
They couldnšt believe it when he was set free
Livin' on a diet of gristle and bone
Late nights payin' for love on the phone
Passed out on the couch with a bottle of jack
Waitin' for a woman who will never come back
Long nights - looking for love
Lost in a world of concrete and blood
Waiting - for a sign from above
