When I first heard the drumming I tried to make them stop
But they said I was a coward and disloyal
I tried so hard to tell them that there is no need for killing
And that there are alternatives to oil
But they kept shouting bout September
(when we watched the towers collapse)
And how we must do something
Cause we have to pay them back
And they told me to be silent and to shut my Commie-mouth
That I could show support for war - or I could just get out
That men have died for freedom - but that gives me no right
to spit upon their memory - or scorn their sacrifice.

To say I was astonished would not be strong enough
For the people who attacked me were my friends
They go to church on Sunday and they're kind to cats and dogs
The kind of folks on whom you can depend
But deep inside I'm certain
That killing won't bring peace
That grief will turn to anger
It's the nature of the beast
And just because you're bigger doesn't mean you can't be hurt
Eye-for-an-eye 'til we're all blind and crawling in the dirt
So even though they curse me - I'll keep singing my refrain
Bring them home, Oh bring them home - may we have peace again.
Bring them home, Oh bring them home - may we have peace again.
