This used to be a quiet town
But lately things have changed
Now I can hardly sleep at night
And it's driving me insane
Every night when I go to bed
I'm awakened by the guns
From out there in the wilderness
Where the deals are getting done
I wakeful worry 'bout money now
And the things I need to buy
There's so much that I haven't got
And I'm running out of time
Sometimes I can't help myself
When the rumors start to fly
Of lay-offs here and shut-downs there
It just makes me sick inside
chorus:
It's the economy -- booming
24 hours a day
And we're all enjoying prosperity
At least that's what they say
I was so relieved to watch the news
They've finally eased my mind
The late-night TV mannequin
Said things are going fine
He showed statistics on the screen
The results of surveys too
He said sales are up and crime is down
The economy's a-boom
Well that took a big load off my mind
No worries anymore
We're living in the best of times
I'm surprised I didn't know
My wife and I have all we need
When I look now I can see
Two cars to drive to our three jobs
And our kids staring at TV
chorus
So I don't worry anymore
Despite rumors on the street
Of how they're gonna close the mill
I can still get a good night's sleep
'cause I own stock in the company
And they'll look after me
And even if they close it down
It's all for the best -- you'll see
chorus
