We'd been working real hard through the first heat of summer
Three thousand square bales all stacked in the barn
As I stood on the porch with a cold glass of water
I watched the clouds gather for a much-needed storm
As my wife came and joined me, the rain started falling
She yelled to the kids, "Shut the windows upstairs!"
And we watched the trees bend as the wind began rising
Counted lightning to thunder as the storm filled the air
Refrain:
There's gold in the hills and the heavens above
If you've only got eyes to see
There's gold in the arms of the one that you love
There's gold in your memories
There's gold in your memories
As quick as they came, the storm clouds departed
The fields all around us turned the purest of greens
The freshly washed sunlight provided a rainbow
The most brilliant example that I've ever seen
Before we could speak the kids all went racing
With buckets and shovels they tore 'cross the lawn
Bound for the pasture where the end of the rainbow
Shimmered and danced near an old hollow log
Refrain
Well it seems we're no richer for their deep excavations
No pail full of treasures did they carry back home
But treasure there was in the smiles on their faces
They were so full of magic in their muddy wet clothes
Folks think I'm crazy because I love storms
They can't understand why I sit in the rain
But they do not know how I learned to find magic
From my long ago kids on that far away day
Refrain
