Each and every Sunday morn
the townsfolk get dressed up
and gather at the temple
to thank God for their luck
and they always share a greeting
yea they smile and wave hello
the banker and the corporate boss
and the common working Joe
chorus:
Hallelujah Hallelujah
Soberly they take their seats
the faithful and the blessed
each making furtive mental notes
of how the other is dressed
the preacher stands - they bow their heads
he speaks to God for them
'cause God listens to preachers
more than ordinary men
chorus
The preacher reads from the ancient book
revealing as he goes
the secret meanings hidden there
that only preachers know
next they pass the money plates
'cause God needs money too
and even unbelievers give
just in case it might be true
chorus
They wish upon the magic baby
or better yet his mother
then go outside and try to hide
what they've done to one another
but they'll be back next weekend
in their shiny Sunday clothes
the banker and the corporate boss
and the common working Joe
