In the Dust Bowl

Sally comes from the sort of town
where you drive right through it then you turn back around
because you missed the place you was looking for
that first pass turns into three or four
water tower and them stadium lights
Sunday mornings and Friday nights
hardware store and a handful of bars
lives consummated in the backseat of cars
in the dust bowl
in the dust bowl
in the dust bowl
Married the first boy who made her laugh
wedding day a barbeque and a half
Preacher blessed the food then dove right in
and drank himself a river of mortal sin
got themselves a half a double near the county line
planted roses 'round a virgin Mary shrine
and then sat and waited for their dreams to come
until the wind off the river made their feet turn numb
in the dust bowl
in the dust bowl
in the dust bowl
Four babies in five years
working nights and weekends as a cashier
Bobby locked out at the paper mill
spends his days tinkering with a homemade still
savings gone health insurance too
when the kids get sick she nurses 'em through
belly gone soft and hair undone
she says "mamma is it always this much fun?"
in the dust bowl
in the dust bowl
Saturday's for her Mom Sunday's for his
kisses on the cheek candy for the kids
holding hands everything's just fine
I hear they're gonna open a brand new line
the union got bloodied but she'll still on her feet
now lets all pray and lets all eat
kids fall asleep on the drive back home
all buckled in no room to roam
in the dust bowl
in the dust bowl
in the dust bowl
Passing each other in the hall
bored to tears and in free fall
he comes home smelling of cheap perfume
she just moves into the baby's room
she's had a fling or two but it don't mean much
just so and so and such and such
just wanting to feel like a girl again
playing dress up and remember when
in the dust bowl
in the dust bowl
in the dust bowl
Tell me where can you go to where can you run
once you've had your fill and had your fun
and the creases invade from points unknown
and the jury's in and the deal's been blown
and the kids just know that something's not right
but they know enough not to be impolite
and Mary in the backyard has seen better days
and you no longer never cease to amaze
in the dust bowl
