On veterans day we stop and say
isn't it a shame they had to die that way
but are we walking before we crawl?
tell me why do they have to die at all?
20 year old kids buried in the ground
men who sent them with words profound
kiss the wives and the mothers goodbye
get back in the limo with no reply

On veterans day grandpa dons dress blues
they wheel him out as if on cue
give him a flag to wave when the cameras roll
then they ship him back to his spider hole
benefits cut back every year
forced to work part time as a cashier
this man who landed at Normandy
is now a new Wal Mart trainee

so you support the troops
that's what you say
but when they come home
you turn 'em away
they fight your wars
while your feet of clay
forces remembrance
for just one day

On veterans day the wars goes on
while the leader directs with his baton
marshal music everywhere
and the love of country fills the air
while the parade passes and the band performs
a Viet Nam vet struggles to stay warm
huddled by a fire by the river bed
visions of his buddies in his head

so you support the troops
that's what you say
but when they come home
you turn 'em away
they fight your wars
while your feet of clay
forces remembrance
on veterans day
