The Day Woody Guthrie Died

I don't have a suitcase
only carry what I wear
some folks act friendly
others like you ain't there
watched the world spin
and the people spin too
telling me different
than they're telling you
truth remained truthful and the liars still lied
on the day that Woody Guthrie died

Artists will paint the sky blue
and the grass they'll make green
and them laughing children
drawn the prettiest you've seen
but when the sky it turns gray
and the grass it grows brown
the children grow hungry
and they don't make a sound
painters picked up their brushes and things went awry
on the day that Woody Guthrie died

Turn up your guitars
and bang on your drums
you may think what you're doing
ain't ever been done
but come talk to the people
who live and work this land
they'll tell you of a wiry
brave curly haired man
hell even Bob Dylan learned to cry
on the day that Woody Guthrie died

so today as I sit here
my mind full of holes
parts of it rotted
and parts of it sold
I wonder if Woody
could feel on that day
and if he bothered to hold on
while he was slipping away
rain fell like tears from a working man's eye
on the day that Woody Guthrie died
